A Bit of History!

The earliest fire suppression (department, or brigade) was formed in the early 1700's, when men and women used water filed buckets, handed one by one in the attempt to extinguish flames. Later, a horse driven carriage lead men to the site of a fire where other methods for extinguishing flames were available. Throughout the years to come, people relied on steam driven carriages to carry them to the scene of a fire.

Despite their earliest efforts to extinguish fires, houses, farms, and land structures "burned to the ground" because of lack of training and useless equipment. Although these efforts were established to fight fires, these men and women gave it all they had to save their community. Today, trained individuals now have the vehicles, equipment, and knowledge to perform the duties to fight fires and to save lives.

Although the earliest pioneers, called "firefighters," used what was necessary to extinguish flames, they didn't have the sophisticated knowledge and equipment to suppress fire. As all of us can see we have come a long way with suppression (firefighting) since the 1700's.

Instead of carrying water-filled buckets to a fire scene, we now have hoses... To deliver vast amounts of water at an extraordinary rate.

Instead of the old "horse and carriage" vehicle system, we now have engines to take us to the scene quickly, safely, and efficiently.

Finally, training has contributed all this into one nutshell... we have learned about fire and its properties.

Therefore, we know just exactly how it behaves and how we can attack its furry. The Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire, Rescue, and EMS Department is proud of the earliest pioneers who have brought us to our foresight.

We have learned from those individuals in the past, developed better equipment to fight fires, and have taught the community about fire safety.

We, at the Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire, Rescue, and EMS Department have a solid reputation to maintain safety, as well as come to the call for help when requested by citizens.
